Allegiant (Divergent #3) by Veronica Roth

First Impression: After reading Divergent and Insurgent, I expect big things from Allegiant.
Characters: Tris and Tobias (Four) both develop in leaps and bounds in Allegiant. I personally found that they start to resemble each other in character more and more, as is true of any good relationship. Not so much that they are one person, but of one mind – even in the tough stuff. I appreciated the resolution with Tobias’ parents, even if it’s not what most expected.

World Building: Let me just say that most people are upset with where the storyline went, and had very different ideas it seems as to what lay ‘outside the fence’. Personally, I appreciated the plot twist of genetic manipulation, as a great study on humanity. This is not as farfetched as some would like to believe of our government. Genes are modified in products, foods, and yes – even humans. I would have liked to see a bit more description of the world ‘outside the fence’; as dystopian stories go, this was lacking a bit.
Writing Style: Everyone seems up-in-arms regarding the point of view switch from Tobias to Tris every other chapter. Although at times a bit confusing, I like this overall idea. Perhaps it would have made more sense to keep consistency for at least a few chapters at a time, or italicizing one of their perspectives. I found myself having to reread sections because I read them in the wrong ‘voice’.
What I Liked: The ending, dear me the ending! I didn’t see that coming, certainly not in a young adult romance-driven novel. I won’t spoil it for those of you who have yet to read, but be prepared that not every story ends with a big happy bow tying all the strands together. I liked the relationship development between Tris and her brother, and the realistic struggles between her and Tobias.
Deal Benders: The point of view switching made this a tougher read than most YA books.  The world building was lacking a bit for a final book in a series.
Overall Rating: I gave this book 4 stars because I really like the story. Sometimes the delivery was a bit off, but we aren’t talking big leagues, favorite book of all time anyway. There’s a reason these authors are not competing in the adult category, people.
For Fans Of: The Hunger Games, Delirium, Matched

  1. The ending got me too. I was misty eyed. I would have liked the ending after the big 'incident' (not gonna say what it is in case I spoil it for someone). Felt like it was rushed a bit after that happens, and we got that brief flash forward but not much else. Maybe it had to be that
    way though?

Found you through the Making Connections group on Goodreads- I see we have both reviewed/are reviewing Grief: Five Stories of Apocalyptic Loss.

Anywho, just dropping in to say hi!
